Technical Aspects of Chronicles of Elyria

CoE consists of three primary engines, this includes the SBS proprietary Soulborn Engine, Spatial OS, and Unreal Engine 4.

Soulborn Engine: The Soulborn Engine is the engine that drives many of the primary game mechanics for Chronicles of Elyria.

Spatial OS: Spatial OS is server technology that allows the game to support millions of entities within the world. It is a scalable, distributed operating system for games and adapted to work with Chronicles of Elyria. SpatialOS is a new type of development platform that far exceeds the old limitations involving the standard client-server model. It connects servers on the cloud so that COE sees them as one massively powerful server, providing access to nearly unlimited player connections and computing technology. In many ways, Spatial OS is the backbone of COE.

What isn't yet clear to me, is if the combined computing power of player computers will be contributing to the output of the game, or if it is the combined computing power of COE servers only. Others believe it is strictly

Unreal Engine 4: Unreal Engine 4.9 will be the primary output engine for Chronicles of Elyria.

VoxElyria: VoxElyria is a stand alone WebGL client for COE used primarily during early development. Basically, it is a Voxel version of the game. It is important to note that SBS has developed the game in such a way that they can output it in any format they wish. This means that it's possible to output the game via a Voxel based client as well as Unreal Engine, and at the same time. VoxElyria will be available during all stages of development.

Mobile Companion: VoxElyria may live on, in some form, beyond the development phase as part of their planned mobile companion app. In this case though, it would no longer be Voxel based, "but it would be closer to simple models than voxels." When asked if CoE as a mobile companion would be app based or browser based, Caspian answered with: "It's WebGL based, so either are possible, but we'd probably look to have apps certified in the app stores for added security, etc."
