Life & Death In Elyria

The way death is handled in Elyria is a true innovation for the MMO Market. Perma-death is a reality and to be expected. All characters will die, if not through the hazards of the world, then of natural causes, like aging. In fact, the average life span of a player character in Elyria is one real world year. But this should not concern you, because you have an immortal soul.

The Soul

In Elyria, you have a soul. Your soul carries on after death and inhabits a new body of flesh and brings with it, the experience and skills it learned during your previous life. But more than that, your new body has the ability to learn skills more efficiently thus an old soul has an advantage over younger souls. So death is to be celebrated, because it means greater opportunity for your journey in Elyria.

It should be noted that when your soul occupies a new body, the skills you earned in your past life are not immediately at the same levels as before. You must use those skills to activate them. However, rebirth means accelerated learning and your skills will quickly ramp up to their previous glory, and then continue to rise beyond that at a faster rate than in your previous life.

Initial Distribution of Souls

Souls are unique and when you create a character, you will be given 3 souls to choose from. Souls can have varying strengths and characteristics. Most of the souls will be newborns meaning that when you start, it will be the first life for both your character and your soul. However there will be a few that are older, and fewer still that are already aged at 3 years. So a few players will get lucky with an old soul for their first character, though they will still have to learn skills, they will learn them faster than a new soul. This also helps to mitigate advancement for new players because SBS (Soul Bound Studios) has decided that as the game ages, so to will all souls. This means that if a new player joins 5 years down the road, or if you decide to roll an additional account, then you can still be competitive to some degree with your new character, in a well established world.

If you think it's unfair that a few lucky players will start with old souls, you're right. And that is the intention. A difference in equality means that the world you inhabit will be more interesting, dramatic, and result in a simulated world that has more impact on play experience. And we don't know how others will play their character. Just like in real life, someone with natural abilities, could be ignoring those abilities to focus on other things that they enjoy more, and someone with a true desire to excel in a field that they are ill equipped to master, can become the best in class, given enough time and patience.

Spark of Life

A spark of life is the name given to the item purchased to play the game. A Spark represents a character in the flesh, within the game, that your soul occupies. A lot of consumers think that COE is a cash grab due to the fact that when your character dies, you must purchase a spark to continue playing. However you are more likely to become incapacitated or injured rather than die, and both can be reversed. You have to be willing to put yourself at great peril to risk death. And when you look at the price of a spark; $30, and then realize that the average life span is 1 year in real life, COE becomes cheaper than a majority of subscription based MMO's that charge around $15 per month. At that rate, you could die 6 times in one year, and still pay the same as you would be paying for many other popular MMO's.

It should be noted that when you purchase the game, it includes 1 spark and 3 souls to choose from and the current minimum price for backers is just $40. Depending on which package you choose, you could end up with significantly more sparks at launch.

Death vs. Perma-death

It's also important to understand that there is death, and then there is perma-death. When you die, you can spirit walk back to your body. Perma-death happens when you are not able to reach your body. The older you are, the more difficult it is to reach your corpse, so an older character has a greater chance at perma-death. Another example is when traveling at sea, drowning far out in the ocean would make it impossible for you to spirit walk back to your corpse to revive it, this is part of what makes exploration dangerous.

Character Talents

Soul stats are random and SBS doesn't know who will get lucky with an exceptionally old soul. But to further fuel the flames of disparity, there is an additional chance that some, but not all characters (not souls) could contain hidden latent talents. These talents have been described as supernatural abilities that have been randomly bestowed upon some characters in order to fulfill a destiny. Some of the known talents include:

  • Planes Walking
  • Medium
  • Healing
  • Animal Speak
  • Shapeshifting
  • Water breathing
  • Magic

Having a hidden talent means that you won't know about it unless it is triggered by some event while playing the game, it could be anything. It's also possible to gain a talent by making yourself part of the story. That means that if you should find yourself in a unique position to advance the Chronicles of Elyria, then fate might help you along the way. But if and when you do find yourself with a talent, what's really going to mess with your head is not knowing if you always had it and the story triggered it, or if fate gave it to you, to help with the story.

With the two possible methods listed above of discovering a talent, less than 5% of the population will have them. If you find the dynamic of inequality off putting, remember this, more hero's are made by overcoming adversity, than those that are born with it.

In most MMO's, everyone is the hero and you walk along the same paths and complete the same quests as everyone else. In Elyria the world is dynamic, duplicate paths are uncommon, everyone is unique, and hero's are truly rare. Just being here and accepting this challenge places you in uncommon company. Is it hard? Maybe. But it's supposed to hard, the hard is what makes it great.
